When Are Peonies in Season? How to Choose Fresh Flowers

Peony season is eagerly awaited for its large, fragrant flowers and the striking transformation from a compact bud into layers of soft petals. Peonies naturally bloom from late spring into early summer. Florists usually have their broadest selection in May and June, but exact dates and varieties available in Chisinau depend on weather and each delivery.

In short: for a bouquet that should open at home, look for resilient buds that feel slightly soft and already show petal colour. More open flowers work well for a same-day event. Avoid soft stems, yellowing foliage and petals with wet or dark patches.

When are peonies in season?

Their natural flowering period is relatively short, running from late spring to early summer. For flower buyers, May and June are usually the main months. A calendar cannot guarantee stock, however: timing varies with cultivar, growing region, spring temperatures and flower logistics.

• April: early or imported batches may appear, often in a limited selection.
• May–June: usually the main period for peonies and peony bouquets.
• Early summer: supplies may continue, but selection increasingly depends on cultivar and delivery.
• Outside the main season: availability and price can change considerably, so the current catalogue is the best guide.

If you need peonies on a specific date, check the peonies category early. Published products, their contents and current prices are more useful than a general calendar.

How to choose fresh peonies

A fully open peony looks spectacular but is already at a later flowering stage. For a gift that will be enjoyed in a vase, a flower just beginning to open is often the more balanced choice. The bud should feel alive and resilient rather than rock-hard or very soft.

• the stem is firm and green, with no soft or slippery areas;
• foliage looks healthy without obvious yellowing;
• the bud is well formed and petal colour is beginning to show;
• outer petals have no wet patches, mould or heavy darkening;
• the flower does not shed petals when moved gently.

Outer guard petals can look rougher than the petals inside. A florist may remove damaged guard petals, and this alone does not mean that a peony is old.

Which opening stage should you choose?

Why the tightest bud is not always best

The idea that the tightest bud will automatically last longest is too simple. A peony cut too early may remain hard and fail to open properly. Cut peonies are often selected when a bud has become resilient, feels slightly soft and has started to reveal its petal colour.

At the other end of the scale, a fully open bloom provides instant volume but is more sensitive to transport and heat. Tell the florist when you need the flowers to look their fullest: today, tomorrow or for a scheduled event. The opening stage can then be chosen around that moment.

How to care for peonies in a vase

1. Wash the vase thoroughly and fill it with clean water; use flower food if it is supplied.
2. Recut the stems with a clean, sharp tool before placing the flowers in water.
3. Remove foliage below the waterline, as submerged plant material contaminates the water.
4. Change the water regularly, wash the vase again and refresh the stem ends when needed.
5. Choose a cool position away from direct sunlight, heat sources, strong draughts and ripening fruit.

Are sticky drops or ants a problem?

Peony buds can produce nectar, which makes their surface slightly sticky and may attract ants. This does not mean the flower is spoiled, and ants are not required for a peony to open. A florist checks and cleans the flowers before arranging and delivering the bouquet.

Which colours and formats can you choose?

Depending on cultivar and season, peonies may be white, pink, coral, red or burgundy. A mono bouquet highlights the flower's rounded shape and volume. In a mixed bouquet, peonies can be paired with roses, lisianthus, greenery and other compatible flowers available on the order date.

Pink and white suit a soft gift or a date, while coral and deeper colours create a stronger accent. The recipient's taste is more useful than rigid rules about what each colour is supposed to mean.

What can replace peonies outside the season?
